No dictators at the Oscars

Oscars organisers have warned Sacha Baron Cohen to not come to this year's Oscars as his latest alter ego, the Dictator.

The British comic's latest alter ego has been told not to make an appearance at the Oscars on Sunday, keen to discourage attendees from promoting their upcoming films.

In 2009 at the MTV Movie awards, Baron Cohen was lowered down onto Eminem while dressed as the out-and-proud gay character, Bruno.

A spokesman for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences told Deadline: 'We would hope that every studio knows that this is a bad idea. The red carpet is not about stunting.'

The Dictator, described as 'the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed', has the main character played by Baron Cohen based around Saddam Hussein/Muammar Gaddafi-type dictators. Directed by Larry Charles, who directed Borat and Bruno, The Dictator is out in May.

Baron Cohen was invited to this year's Oscars as part of the ensemble cast for the 3D fantasy Hugo, directed by Martin Scorsese.

In 2007, Baron Cohen was asked to pres-ent an award as the Oscars, but declined as he was refused permission to do so as his character Borat.
