No more soggy pages in the bath

Australian publishers are to print paperback books that are designed to be waterproof, using the same clear wax sealant as banknotes.

Publishers have announced the world's first waterproof paperback will hit the shelves next summer.

The same clear wax sealant used in Australia to prolong the life of banknotes and reduce the risk of forgery will be introduced to prevent running ink and the soggy torn pages of a book enjoyed in the tub or by the pool. The tough polymer coating is thought to be tear resistant and should increase the book's shelf life by 200%.

The first book to receive the coating has been named as 'The Greater Bad', an ebook by Alan Cork, hard copies of which will go on sale in May next year.

Author Alan Cork said: 'I'm over-the-moon that my book has been chosen to pave the way in a new era of publishing.'
