William and kate's baby to be a Princess

The Queen has confirmed that the should The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby be a girl, then she will get the title of Princess. What a lovely present for Kate for her 31st Birthday which was yesterday (9 January).

The Queen has announced that if her grandson Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton should give birth to a baby daughter in the summer then she will hold the title of princess and be third in line to the throne.

The Queen has overruled a decree introduced by King George V almost 100 years ago, which stated that normally the first son of the Duke and Duchess would automatically be deemed a prince, a daughter would have only been given the title of lady and would not have been referred to as 'Her Royal Highness'.

This change to the rules of royal succession means that males will no longer have preference as heirs to the throne.

The change to the century-old tradition, know as primogeniture, was done by a 'Letter Patent' issued by The Queen on 31 December 2012.

This will now ensure that all of Prince William's children will be given the same titles.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William are expecting their first child to be born sometime this summer.
