Fu Manchu was originally formed in Southern California as a punk rock band in 1985 called Virulence, but after two band members left and were replaced, they changed their name to Fu Manchu.

They soon released the debut single "Kept Between Trees" in 1990, and had two more band changes around this time.Their music is supremely heavy, with a hard bass line, and their lyrics center around skateboarding, pinball, muscle cars and UFOs. With later albums they moved towards a more hard rock style."No One Rides for Free" was the band's first album, released in 1994 and was categorised in the stoner rock genre. They toured extensively following the release of their second album and came to be known as a great live act. They also reached a wider audience at this time in part because they opened for notable bands of the genre.The band put out eight more albums and several singles, with the last album "Signs of Infinite Power" released in 2009. Fu Manchu will be touring the UK this summer.
