The county of Avon was an English county from 1974 to 1996. It was a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county, located in the west of England and named after the River Avon that runs through the region. In 1996 the county was abolished and the area was divided between City of Bristol and Somerset. The name is still used for some technical purposes and is still popular with locals.
