Welcome to East Sussex

East Sussex is the first destination of choice for Londoners fleeing the city when the sun comes out and consequently it has built a reputation (chiefly in Brighton) as a place of cheeky weekends, great nightlife and buckets (and spades) of seaside charm. All of this is certainly true, but there are also landscapes in East Sussex that are amongst the most beautiful in all of the UK.

For hikers and bikers, walkers and ramblers, East Sussex serves up incredible trails that offer amazing views. From the spectacular coastline and the beauty spots of Seven Sisters and the famous cliffs at Beachy Head to the endless and jaw-dropping vistas of the South Downs National Park there is too much to see in one visit.

Whilst Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters (along with the famous white cliffs of Dover) offer the box office views, other highlights such as Camber Sands near Rye are the sort of places you fall in love with and never forget. Getting out and about in East Sussex is best enjoyed either walking or cycling around the numerous scenic fishing villages all packed with ancient churches and buildings (and all seemingly offering their own arts festivals every year). The South Downs Way takes in a lot of the best villages and is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (although it is rather long to try and walk in one go) and winds its way into nearby Hampshire.

Best of all in East Sussex however are the seaside resorts, and whilst Hastings and Eastbourne offer their own take on shingle beaches and Victorian ambience, all sit in the shade of exciting and bohemian Brighton with its hundreds of small record, books and clothing boutiques in the famous Laines; its innovative vegetarian cuisine and amazing nightlife, its alternative music and arts scene and its wonderfully eclectic inhabitants. Known affectionately as London by the Sea it is one of the highlights of the South Coast and not to be missed.
