The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea between Ireland and Great Britain and is a self-governing British Crown Dependency. The Queen is the head of state of the Isle of Man and is appointed the ‘Lord of Mann.’ She is represented on the island by a Lieutenant Governor. Though not part of the UK, the defense of the Isle of Man is the UK’s responsibility.
It has its own government, currency, language, postage stamps and famously, taxation laws. It is also a beautiful island, only 33 miles long and 13 miles wide but with much packed into that space. It has been inhabited since around 6500 BC and the Manx language and culture has been strongly influenced by Gaelic culture and Norse culture. Consequently there are a number of archaeological and historical sites dotted about the island including some that date back to 6500 BC. Other historical highlights include St. Patrick’s Isle where it is believed St Patrick first landed in the 5th Century to bring Christianity to their community and where there are both the ruins of a 13th century round tower and cathedral as well as the 14th century Peel Castle, built by the Lords of Man and containing the ruins of a 7th century monastery.
Another site worth a look is the medieval fortress of Castle Rushen in Castletown to the south of the island. Nearby there is also Rushen Abbey, the Isle of Man’s most important religious site. There are countless museums, galleries and attractions worth visiting, but the best sights tend to be outdoors, from mountains to valleys and from wildlife parks to nature reserves and trails such as the 95 mile coastal path or the 28 mile Millenium Way. For golf-heads there are 8 different golf courses and there are plenty of charters offering yachting or fishing expeditions. Lastly of course there are hundreds of quiet sandy beaches tucked here and there, the perfect places to escape to after a hard morning’s sightseeing.
