Welcome to Pembrokeshire

One quickly runs out of superlatives when trying to describe the wonders of Pembrokeshire and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Wide open blue skies and sparkling turquoise sea, long sandy beaches and soaring cliffs, sheltered coves and bubbling, crashing surf all contribute to some spectacular vistas. Throw in visits from minke whales, migrating dolphins and harbor porpoises as well as a resident community of bottlenose dolphins and it quickly becomes clear just how special this county is.

But the landscape isn’t everything. With twee Victorian seaside resort towns such as Fishguard and Newport breaking up the endless beauty there is plenty of man made stuff to inspire awe too. Just outside of Newport, for example, there is Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort a Scheduled Ancient Monument of thatched Iron Age dwellings, reconstructed on the site’s original foundations. Further south there is Pentre Ifan, the most impressive megalith in Wales dating back to 3500BC with a capstone that over 16 ft long which sits on three upright stones 8ft above the ground.

Other highlights include St. David’s, one of the Uk’s smallest cities, containing a Cathedral which has attracted pilgrims since 12th century. Also worth checking out are St David’s Bishops Palace and any one of the city’s many boat trips to Ramsay Island (which is a RSPB reserve and has the 2nd biggest seal colony in the UK). Other historic sites around Pembrokeshire include the Norman Castle and Museum at Haverfordwest, the Napoleonic Old Fort in Lower Fishguard, the Carew Castle and Tidal Mill and Pembroke Castle, possibly one of the best castles in all of the UK.

Nevertheless, most people will be in Pembrokeshire for the Coastal Park and the trails along the majestic cliffs, sand dunes and glorious coves do not disappoint. Probably one of the finest coastal trails in the UK.
