Days out and events in Telford, Shropshire

Birthplace of Industry

Telford is the largest town in Shropshire, named after the famous civil engineer, Thomas Telford. It has an estimated population of over 160,000 and is said to be "The Birthplace of Industry" due to the Telford areas Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge Gorge playing important roles in the Industrial Revolution. It is a new town, having been developed in the 1960s, fusing together the main districts Dawley, Wenlock, Oakengates and Wellington to create an alliance.

Though Telford town itself is new, there are many little historic gems scattered in the area such as the major Shropshire landmark The Iron Bridge. The Iron Bridge was the first bridge of its size in the world created entirely out of cast iron, built high above the river Severn that runs through the valley. The Wrekin hill overlooks Telford and is thought to be approximately 680 million years old; it is a popular route for walkers, bikers and horse riders with stunning views across the whole of Shropshire.

Telford Town Centre has a large cinema, one of the few indoor ice skating rinks in the Midlands and an impressive shopping centre that stocks the latest in high street fashion.
