Canterbury Festival to be the best ever

As one of the South East's most important creative events of the year, a visit to the International Arts Festival in Canterbury is a must.

With a sponsorship link to Canterbury's own Christ Church University, a fantastic mix of professional and student performances will dominate this two week festival, with live music, comedy, theatre, drama, talks, family days, fringe style sets and so much more.

With over 200 different events taking place around this historic town between October 13th and 27th 2012, there is something for everyone with venues including theatres, museums, and universities.

The history of Canterbury Festival stems right back to the 1920's when the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, George Bell established the first local event of its kind. Over the years, including an interruption to its organisation through the war years of 1939 to 1945, Canterbury Festival has taken many forms, both small and large scale. Its real renaissance came in 1984 when the Canterbury Theatre and Festival Trust campaigned to build a new theatre and held the first newly revamped festival in honour of its opening. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength and in 2009 the Festival was asked by Canterbury City Council to take charge of the development of creative writing and live literature events in the district.

Whilst its growing popularity has seen it become one of the South East's most loved events, Director Rosie Turner says, 'Canterbury Festival has a very distinguished history. It's our job to ensure that its greatest success is still to come.' With an incredible and extensive line up for 2012, it may just be their best year yet!
