Welcome to Gwent

Gwent is one of Wales’s preserved counties and is a former local government county of southeastern Wales. Formed on 1st April 1974 it was made up of most of Monmouthshire and the county borough of Newport as well as Llanelly and Brynmawr. It was abolished as a county by the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 and Gwent County Council was abolished on 1 April 1996. It remains a preserved county for ceremonial reasons and the term is sometimes used as a synonym for the historic county of Monmouthshire.
